Hey there! I’m Nicole Devison and welcome to my wellness blog. My hubby of 21 years is Simon and we have 3 teenagers at home; Fred, Nik, and Dave. Life can get hectic once you add in my wellness business, a full time job as an industrial millwright mechanic, two dogs, and two kitties. But that’s okay because I thrive on it. This is where it all began for me, going from a struggle with migraine and chronic pain to a healthier lifestyle.
Life was easy before chronic pain
Life was easy when I was younger and didn’t have to struggle with chronic pain. It started in my early twenties and was very scary. I had no idea why I was suddenly going numb, unable to move for a few minutes. The doctor diagnosed scoliosis. This led to chronic headaches and migraines. It was heartbreaking to be alone at university and suddenly swept into this storm of pain.
My doctor prescribed medication that turned me into a walking zombie. Sleeping 14 hours a day and gorging on chocolate bars led me into a lifetime struggle with my health and wellness.
Every time I seemed to be getting healthier, life was disrupted. Whether it was through pregnancies, relocations, job changes, or my mother’s cancer; I was depressed and coped through food. I was a stress eater and needed to overcome that and manage my depression.
Time for a change
Sitting in the doctor’s office at an annual physical, I realized I didn’t want to be on “nerve pills” the rest of my life to control my moods. At 60lbs heavier than I should be for my height, it was affecting me physically. I could barely get through a day of work without being out of breath. The extra weight made me slow, I had difficulty bending down, and couldn’t climb into machines to repair them. I could barely do my job.
From migraine to a healthier lifestyle
I resolved to be healthier and began my wellness journey. Daily exercise helps to keep my endorphins high so my depression doesn’t set in. Although I tried to avoid it, sometimes pills are needed. My migraines are managed now through daily medication. I have learned to make healthier food choices and through education, no longer use food to cope.
And work? The daily exercising and weight loss has made me more limber so I’ve become more efficient at my job and quicker when walking the plant floor. As a result, I now have a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
